We caught up with Paige Arnof-Fenn, Founder & CEO of Mavens & Moguls, a Marketing, Branding, PR, Market Research & Communications firm that she runs from her home in Cambridge, MA with clients globally. Paige has owned Mavens & Moguls since 2002. We asked Paige for her best growth tip for her business. She came back with a very interesting answer:
“My advice is to go on a Listening Tour! Politicians do it all the time and it is great for business too. “
A couple years ago, Paige’s business had slowed down a bit, but she had some travel planned for speaking engagements.
She made a list of friends, acquaintances, movers & shakers, people she admired in the cities where she was traveling and simply picked up the phone and invited people for coffee to catch up during her downtime. It’s important to note that she went to these meetings with an open mind, just to listen, catch up, without a sales agenda whatsoever. She made it a point to ask a few smart open-ended questions then sat back and really listened. Turned out, Paige could help several of them immediately, and several more long term.
The bottom line is this: people are more than happy to tell you what is on their mind, what going on in their businesses. If you listen to what they share with you there will be plenty of opportunities to help them. Paige did it when business slowed, and she happened to be traveling, but you can do it anytime.
It is a great way to connect and a lot of fun too. Start listening with no strings attached, you’ll be amazed what you find. It does not cost much, for the price of a few coffees and snacks you will get an earful. Paige had no idea what to expect and got a lot of new work as a result.
Paige did her listening tour the old fashioned way, by picking up the phone, asking a few open-ended questions, and taking notes with a pad and pen. I wonder if there is a digital equivalent? Let us know if you try it and have success!
